Finch onboarding screen 12: Age as the first quiz question, gated on a soft 'this helps us personalize your experience' justification

12

Age as the first quiz question, gated on a soft 'this helps us personalize your experience' justification. Pairing the ask with the why is the right instinct, but age and gender up front are about segmentation/ad signal as much as personalization. Fine, just be honest that the user gets nothing back from these two yet.

14

Finch onboarding screen 16: 'Have you used Finch before

16

'Have you used Finch before? No, this is my first time! / Yes, but I'm starting fresh.' Clean returning-user fork, and the progress bar up top sets expectations that this quiz has a defined end. Good goal-gradient hygiene on what is a genuinely long question set.

Finch onboarding screen 27: 'Do you struggle with any of these mental health challenges

27

'Do you struggle with any of these mental health challenges? PTSD / Depression / ADHD / Anxiety / Bipolar...' This is heavy, clinical zero-party data, and it's a multi-select (the + buttons make that clear). The reason to collect it is real personalization downstream, but for a mental-health app the bar is high: if I tell you I have depression and anxiety, I'd better see that reflected in my goals and at the paywall, or it reads as data harvesting.

28

29

Finch onboarding screen 31: The payoff question for the whole quiz

31

The payoff question for the whole quiz. 'What areas would you like support with? Manage stress and anxiety / Appreciate the good things / Build healthy eating habits...' Note the copy is benefits-led and emotional ('Appreciate the good things', 'Stay fresh and clean'), not 'Track gratitude' / 'Hygiene'. Multi-select via the + buttons, which is correct: people want support with several things at once. These selections are what should drive the starter plan two screens later.

Finch onboarding screen 49: Loading screen

49

Loading screen. 'Generating your self-care goals with Noodle...' This is the personalization-payoff stall: it signals the app is doing work on the answers you just gave, so the upcoming goal list feels earned and custom rather than canned. Classic and effective use of a loader.

50

Finch onboarding screen 51: This is the moment the quiz pays off

51

This is the moment the quiz pays off. 'Jacob's starter plan. Try these easy goals with Noodle!' My name on the plan, and the goals (Get out of bed, Brush teeth, Drink water, Take 3 deep breaths) are deliberately tiny so the very first action feels winnable. Personalization continuity done right: I answered questions, now I see a plan that's labeled mine. The goals could lean harder on the specific support areas I picked, but the framing is exactly the value reveal you want before a paywall.

Finch onboarding screen 52: Paywall sequence opens with a reframe, not a price

52

Paywall sequence opens with a reframe, not a price. 'Finch is free to use. But we'd love for you to try Finch Plus for 7 days free too!' Leading with 'free to use' lowers the defensiveness so the trial feels like a bonus, not a wall. This is a soft, story-style paywall intro (multi-screen, curiosity-driven 'See my FREE offer') rather than a static price card. The kind of interactive paywall that converts better than a boring one.

Finch onboarding screen 53: Second screen of the paywall story: 'One-time offer

53

Second screen of the paywall story: 'One-time offer! 50% OFF when you start your free trial now. Biggest discount ever, just for you & Noodle.' Curiosity + scarcity stacked, and the discount is personalized to the pet relationship. Revealing the discount as its own beat ('See FREE offer details') is the 'reveal your discount' interactive move. Better than dumping price and % on one screen.

Finch paywall with pricing, onboarding screen 54

54

The actual paywall, and it's well built. Annual default with a 7-day trial, a 'Today / Day 5 / Day 7' timeline that pre-empts the 'when am I charged' anxiety (the Day 5 reminder-notification beat is the single best cancellation-reducer here), strikethrough anchor $69.99 → $34.99 (save 50%), and exit-intent urgency 'Offer expires when you exit this screen!' There's a 'Skip this one-time offer' escape, so it's trial-optional, not a hard wall. One thing to watch: a 7-day free trial on annual leaks revenue from people who try a few days and churn. Worth testing a shorter trial or a cheaper intro against it.

Finch onboarding screen 55: HDYHAU placed AFTER the paywall

55

HDYHAU placed AFTER the paywall. 'Friends/family, Games, Television, Facebook/Instagram, Found on Google, Therapist/medical professional...' Good to capture attribution to feed ad networks, but burying it post-paywall means you only get it from people who didn't bail at the wall. I'd test surfacing this earlier so the answer rate isn't gated on paywall survival.

56

57

Finch onboarding screen 58: Commitment screen

58

Commitment screen. 'How many days in a row will you take care of Noodle? 2 days (Baby steps) / 5 days (Strong start) / 7 days (Clearly committed) / 14 days (Unstoppable streak).' This is a streak pre-commitment, and framing it as caring for Noodle (not 'your streak goal') is the clever part. You're committing to the pet, which is stickier than committing to yourself. Placing it after the paywall is fine, but this kind of commit-interaction also works beautifully right before the paywall to raise buy-in; worth A/B testing the position.

59

60

Finch onboarding screen 61: Widget prompt with a stat

61

Widget prompt with a stat. 'Make your habits stick! Users with the widget are 4x more likely to stick with their self-care habits.' Social proof tied to a retention mechanic, not vanity. Getting the widget on the home screen is a real activation lever (constant re-engagement surface), so selling it here with a concrete 4x claim is smart. I'd just make sure that number is defensible.

62

63

Finch onboarding screen 64: Onboarding doesn't end at the paywall

64

Onboarding doesn't end at the paywall. They drop you onto a home screen that's already populated with your plan: '7 goals left for today', Get out of bed / Brush teeth / Wash my face, with a '1st Adventure 0/15' progress bar. No blank dashboard, no 'now what.' The first goals are trivially completable, so your activation event (first goal check-off) is seconds away. This is the right way to hand off from onboarding to product.

65

66

67

Finch onboarding screen 68: First-completion celebration

68

First-completion celebration. 'Woohoo! Noodle drank Water and energized for Day 1' with a +130 Rainbow Stones reward and an energy bar hitting MAX. Rewarding the very first action with in-game currency is textbook: motivate the important action, then reward it immediately so the loop feels good on rep one. This is the aha for a gamified self-care app. Your tiny real-world action visibly helped the pet.

Finch onboarding screen 69: Goal-gradient hook for retention

69

Goal-gradient hook for retention. 'Noodle is growing up a little! Evolve Noodle into Toddler: Achieve 7 full-energy days (1/7).' They show you a progress bar that's already 1/7 complete, which exploits the endowed-progress effect: a goal you've already started feels closer to done. Tying the pet's evolution to 7 days of self-care gives you a concrete reason to come back tomorrow. The retention promise that justifies the whole flow.
