Pimsleur onboarding screen 2: 'Try a Free Lesson' sits above Sign In and Create an account as the primary button

2

'Try a Free Lesson' sits above Sign In and Create an account as the primary button. Leading with the free thing instead of the account is the right order, and Pimsleur has a genuinely good first lesson to give away.

Pimsleur onboarding screen 3: Country before anything else, for pricing and content localisation

Country before anything else, for pricing and content localisation. Framing it as 'I am from...' makes an admin question feel like part of a conversation instead of a form field.

Pimsleur onboarding screen 4: Here's the catch

4

Here's the catch. 'Try a Free Lesson' routes to 'Create an account for your free lesson.' The free lesson costs an email. That's a defensible trade, but the button on the previous screen didn't say so, and the gap between the promise and the ask is exactly where people bounce. Put 'account required' on the button and lose the surprise.

Lesson 1 plays immediately and it's the real thing, a full thirty minute Pimsleur unit rather than a sample. Giving away a whole lesson is a strong reciprocity play in a category where most apps hand you two minutes and a paywall.

Pimsleur onboarding screen 11: Lessons 2 and 3 sit right there with padlocks on them, directly under the one you just enjoyed

11

Lessons 2 and 3 sit right there with padlocks on them, directly under the one you just enjoyed. The free lesson creates the want and the lock is what converts it. Showing the locked content beats hiding it every time.

The Practice tab is mostly locked too, including 'Bonus Packs: Complete 5 lessons to access the Bonus Cards.' That one isn't a paywall, it's a progress gate. Mixing the two in the same list muddies what money buys versus what effort buys, and confused users don't buy.

Streaks, 0/30 lessons completed, certificates and a Voice Coach Challenge score, every one of them sitting at zero. Progress mechanics need at least one filled cell to pull on anybody. I'd credit the free lesson here before showing the grid.
