Yuka onboarding screen 5: Email signup before you've scanned anything — Email signup before you've scanned anything. The carrot mascot and 'Root for good health!' make it friendlier, but it's still a wall in front of the value. Yuka can get away with it because the brand is known. For most apps I'd let people scan one product first, then ask for the account.

Yuka onboarding screen 7: Create account is email and password only, no Apple or Google login — Create account is email and password only, no Apple or Google login. That's more typing than you want right before the core action. At minimum add Sign in with Apple to cut the friction.

Yuka onboarding screen 9: One button, 'Scan my 1st product', pointed straight at the core action — One button, 'Scan my 1st product', pointed straight at the core action. Good for value speed: the aha here is scan a barcode and get a score, so they get you there in one tap instead of an explainer carousel.

The shock comes from the product itself, your own deodorant graded bad. That's a stronger hook than anything Yuka could say about itself.

Showing the work makes the rating feel earned instead of arbitrary, which is what keeps people trusting (and scanning).

This is the payoff after the bad score, and the obvious monetization lane: those swaps are affiliate-ready.

Yuka onboarding screen 40: Free to scan, pay to search — Free to scan, pay to search. The paywall is contextual: you only hit it when you try to search the 4 million product catalog, after scanning has already shown its worth. Firing the ask the moment someone wants more beats a cold paywall upfront.

They frame it as supporting the mission instead of buying a subscription. It fits Yuka's independent positioning, but I'd want to see the take rate against a plain fixed price.

The default sits low so entry feels easy, then you anchor yourself upward. Letting people talk themselves into paying more rather than negotiating down.
