Coursera onboarding screen 2: The ATT prompt is the first thing that happens, before a single screen of product

2

The ATT prompt is the first thing that happens, before a single screen of product. Their own justification is honest at least, 'personalized promotions and recommendations', which is exactly what it's for. Asking cold on launch is still the worst possible moment.

Coursera onboarding screen 3: 'You haven't enrolled in any courses (yet)' is the first real screen

3

'You haven't enrolled in any courses (yet)' is the first real screen. No onboarding, no goal question, no signup, just an empty state and an Explore courses button. The '(yet)' is doing a lot of work to make an empty shelf feel like a beginning.

5

A 'We just introduced automatic translations!' announcement fired at someone who installed the app ninety seconds ago. Feature announcements assume a baseline the user doesn't have. New-user and existing-user modals need different gates and this one has none.

7

No personalization anywhere, so the catalog does the selling instead: Yale's Science of Well-Being at 4.9 from 37,000 ratings, Learning How to Learn at 4.8 from 89,000. University brands and rating counts are the social proof, and for Coursera that's stronger than anything a quiz could produce.

Coursera onboarding screen 8: Popular searches are machine learning, ai, data analytics, project management, power bi, generative ai…

8

Popular searches are machine learning, ai, data analytics, project management, power bi, generative ai, cybersecurity, digital marketing. Every one is a job skill. That list is Coursera telling you what it thinks it is, and it isn't curiosity.

Coursera onboarding screen 12: 'That feeling of completion is just around the corner

12

'That feeling of completion is just around the corner. Your completed courses and certificates will be here.' Selling the future state on an empty profile. Nice line, and it's the only emotional copy in the whole flow.

15

Signup finally appears, with 'Sign Up Later' in the corner. Browse first, account when you want one. That's the right order for a catalog this deep, and the opposite of Quizlet and Chegg in this same batch.

23

A full Terms of Use update served to a brand new account. Legally necessary, and it lands on someone with no relationship to the old terms. If you must run this, exempt accounts created after the effective date.

Coursera onboarding screen 26: Search is where the product actually starts for most people, and there's no history to personalize it with

26

Search is where the product actually starts for most people, and there's no history to personalize it with. The popular-search list is doing double duty as onboarding here.

29

'Explore with a Coursera Plus Subscription' as a shelf inside the catalog, alongside Most Popular Certificates and Earn Your Degree. No modal paywall anywhere in this capture. The subscription is merchandised like content rather than gating it, which fits a catalog where individual courses and degrees are the real products.

Coursera onboarding screen 34: 'Welcome to a wonderful world of learning

34

'Welcome to a wonderful world of learning. We're excited to meet the newest member of Coursera's global community, you.' A welcome push on day one. Warm, and it says nothing about what to do next, which is what a day-one notification is for.

Coursera onboarding screen 36: 'Get Started with These Free Courses' as its own shelf

36

'Get Started with These Free Courses' as its own shelf. Giving away real courses in the same catalog you're selling from is the reciprocity play, and it works better here than a trial because the free thing is a genuine finished product.

Coursera onboarding screen 42: 'Learn a New Skill in 2 Hours'

42

'Learn a New Skill in 2 Hours'. Merchandising by time commitment rather than subject. The objection for an adult learner isn't interest, it's whether they have the hours, so answering that on the shelf label is smart.
