Mathway onboarding screen 3: Camera permission fires before the welcome screen, cold, with nothing priming it

3

Camera permission fires before the welcome screen, cold, with nothing priming it. Mathway is a Chegg service and Photomath in this same batch makes the identical mistake. You get one iOS dialog and no second chance, and they spend it on screen three.

Mathway onboarding screen 4: 'Before we get started, let's take a look around' with a Start tutorial button

4

'Before we get started, let's take a look around' with a Start tutorial button. A tour in front of a product that's a calculator keypad you'd understand by looking at it. Explainer instead of show, and it's standing between the user and the thing they opened the app to do.

Mathway onboarding screen 5: The keypad is the product and it's usable immediately

5

The keypad is the product and it's usable immediately. No account, no wall, no tutorial required. Right call for a utility: the highest intent you'll ever get is someone opening a math app with homework sitting in front of them.

Mathway onboarding screen 6: The ATT tracking prompt stacked right behind the camera prompt

6

The ATT tracking prompt stacked right behind the camera prompt. Two system dialogs inside the first thirty seconds, neither primed. Stacked like this they both get declined at a much higher rate than either would alone.

7

Signup asked for with a reason attached: 'Sign in or create an account to start saving your work.' That's how to ask. The account buys something specific that's visible on the screen you're standing on, instead of being a toll collected at the door.

Camera denied, and the app degrades to 'Enable camera access' plus 'Upload an image from gallery'. Compare to Photomath, which dead-ends completely on the same denial. A fallback path costs almost nothing and saves the session.

The trial pitched from inside the menu, naming the gated thing exactly: 'Get the step-by-step solution with detailed explanations.' Much better than 'unlock premium'. You know what you're buying before you tap.

Mathway paywall with pricing, onboarding screen 20

20

Monthly at $9.99 is preselected over annual at $39.99. That's backwards from nearly everything else in this batch. Annual works out to $3.33 a month, so the plan they're steering you away from is the cheaper one. Either they're optimising trial starts over lifetime value or this default hasn't been revisited in years. I'd test flipping it.
