Cold-open emotional hook before any sign-up or value: 'Dimmed by noise, apps, and everything else pulling at you' over the signature opal-2024-04. Sets the problem-aware frame and lets the visual brand carry a dark, near-textless screen.

Name capture, framed as the coach getting to know you ('I'll help protect your focus' → 'First, what's your name?'). Pulling the name this early personalizes every downstream screen and banks a cheap first 'yes' before any harder ask.

Opal onboarding screen 7: Email-first wall placed extremely early, before any quiz or value is delivered7
Email-first wall placed extremely early, before any quiz or value is delivered. Email + password with phone and Apple fallbacks, plus 'Your sensitive data is protected by Apple' trust copy to soften the friction. Front-loading the account this hard is aggressive for a screen-time app and likely costs top-of-funnel completion.

Opal onboarding screen 13: Goal-setting opener: 'What matters most to you?' (Focus / Sleep / Be more present / Improve mental health)13
Goal-setting opener: 'What matters most to you?' (Focus / Sleep / Be more present / Improve mental health). Classic motivation-capture that gets later echoed back in the personalized projection and the Sleep/Focus/Rest framing.
Opal onboarding screen 1414
Opal onboarding screen 15: Age question, but notice the running recap above it ('Sleep better → You want your nights back')15
Age question, but notice the running recap above it ('Sleep better → You want your nights back'). Opal keeps echoing your stated goal back as you answer, so each step feels like one continuous personalized conversation rather than a form.
Opal onboarding screen 1616
Opal onboarding screen 1717
Opal onboarding screen 18: 'What best describes you?' (Entrepreneur)18
'What best describes you?' (Entrepreneur). The reframe above it. 'Old enough to know what matters and to know what you're losing'. Does loss-framing work *before* the question, priming the time-wasted narrative Opal monetizes at the paywall.
Opal onboarding screen 1919
Opal onboarding screen 20: Self-reported screen time input ('best guess is okay')20
Self-reported screen time input ('best guess is okay'). The key data point Opal weaponizes later into the '91 days / 18 years of your life' projection. Low-friction estimate buckets keep the quiz moving.
Opal onboarding screen 2121
Opal onboarding screen 22: 'Reviewing your responses…' with a progress bar22
'Reviewing your responses…' with a progress bar. The classic personalization/loading moment. It manufactures the sense that a tailored plan is being computed from your answers, inflating the perceived value of what sits behind the upcoming paywall.

Screen Time / Family Controls permission ask, pre-framed with 'Let's connect Opal to Screen Time. Securely.' and an arrow nudging toward Continue. Required for the core product, so they invest a full priming screen plus 'protected by Apple' reassurance before the native dialog.
Opal onboarding screen 2828
Opal onboarding screen 29: Native Screen Time authorization dialog ('Allow with Face ID')29
Native Screen Time authorization dialog ('Allow with Face ID'). This is the load-bearing permission. Without it the whole blocking product is inert, which is why it gets the dedicated soft-sell on the prior screen.

App/website blocking selection where users pick categories and specific apps to restrict. 'Show me how' offers a guided path; this is the commitment moment that turns the quiz into a configured product the user has invested setup effort into.

Escalation of the same projection to '18 years of your life looking down at your phone.' Animated count-up (17 / 18 / 19 years) maximizes the emotional gut-punch before the value pitch.

Notification permission ask, primed with 'Allow Opal to nudge you' and an arrow pointing at the system dialog. Nudges are core to the habit loop, and notifications also enable the pre-trial-ending reminder used to drive conversion.

Trial-reminder scheduling ('When should we remind you before your trial ends?') with 'Enable notifications to receive this reminder.' Reduces accidental charges in theory, but mostly a trust signal that primes the trial-required ask and re-confirms notification opt-in.

Opal onboarding screen 67: Primary paywall67
Primary paywall. Free-trial timeline framing (Day 1 / Day 6 / Day 7) above press logos (Apple Design Awards 2025, NYT, WSJ). '7 Days for $0.00, then $0.27/day ($99.99/year)', two yearly options (7-day free vs 30-day for $4.99), 'No payment due now.' Annual-default trial, no monthly shown here. Pushes the high-LTV plan first.
Opal onboarding screen 68: Same paywall with the 'Restore / Terms / Skip for now' sheet exposed68
Same paywall with the 'Restore / Terms / Skip for now' sheet exposed. The paywall is skippable and has a close affordance, so this is a soft trial-optional gate rather than a hard wall.

Exit-intent downsell: on dismiss, 'Not ready for a year? Try a monthly plan instead' at $19.99/month with its own trial and 'No thanks.' A second-chance offer to catch users who balk at the annual commitment.
Opal onboarding screen 71: Native StoreKit sheet for the $19.99/month monthly downsell71
Native StoreKit sheet for the $19.99/month monthly downsell. '1-week free trial, then $19.99/month, cancel anytime.' Confirms the monthly path is real and trial-backed, not just an anchor.
