Adapty vs. Superwall: which should you use?

By Jacob Rushfinn, updated

The short answer

Adapty is a full subscription platform: it validates purchases, runs analytics with predicted LTV, and renders paywalls and onboarding natively. Superwall started with paywalls, charges its 1% on paywall-attributed revenue, and fits teams that want web-rendered paywalls they can change without an app update, on Superwall's own billing or on top of RevenueCat.

Which one fits your app

Choose Adapty if…

  • you want paywalls and onboarding rendered natively rather than in a web view.
  • you want subscription infrastructure, analytics with predicted LTV and paywalls from one vendor and one SDK.
  • you build in Unity, where Adapty's SDK is stable and Superwall's is still in beta.

Choose Superwall if…

  • a big share of your revenue doesn't come through a paywall, since Superwall's 1% applies to paywall-attributed revenue.
  • you want to keep RevenueCat or your own billing and add a paywall and experiment layer on top.
  • you want campaigns with percentage splits and holdout groups, and the layout freedom of web-rendered paywalls.

Switching between Adapty and Superwall

Adapty publishes a six-step guide for moving from Superwall and says most migrations take about two hours. Subscribers keep access through their store receipts, so there's nothing to import. Superwall campaigns become Adapty placements and audiences, though you recreate the audiences by hand, and paywalls render natively instead of in a web view.

Adapty has no equivalent of Superwall's purchase controller: your code calls Adapty's purchase and restore methods directly. While both run, Adapty can forward store events back to Superwall so both stay current.

Moving from Adapty to Superwall means rebuilding paywalls in Superwall's editor, then either using Superwall's own subscription handling or connecting your billing through a purchase controller. Superwall has no Adapty-specific guide, only a general FAQ on moving from another subscription SDK.

Where Botsi fits

Botsi works on top of both Adapty and Superwall. When a user reaches the paywall, Botsi's model picks that user's offer, which can change the price, the packaging and the paywall creative within options you set. Adapty or Superwall then shows that offer and handles the purchase. Whichever platform you choose, Botsi adds to it.

Adapty vs. Superwall: common questions

Is Superwall cheaper than Adapty?

It depends on how much of your revenue comes through paywalls. Adapty is free under $5K in revenue over a rolling 30 days, then charges 1% of each month's tracked revenue. Superwall's subscription infrastructure is free, its paywalls are free up to $10K a month in paywall-attributed revenue, then 1% of it, and its Startup and Scale plans add $49 or $199 a month. Check both pricing pages before you decide, since terms change.

What's the difference between native and web-rendered paywalls?

Adapty renders paywalls natively, without web views. Superwall renders paywalls with web technology, which gives designers more layout freedom. Both let you change paywalls remotely without an app release.

Can I use Superwall paywalls with Adapty handling purchases?

In principle, yes. Superwall's purchase controller can hand purchases to another system, but neither vendor publishes a guide for pairing Superwall with Adapty, so expect to write that code yourself.

How long does it take to move from Superwall to Adapty?

Adapty says most migrations take about two hours. Subscribers keep access through their store receipts, so you don't import them. You do recreate audiences by hand and move paywalls to Adapty's builder.

Which supports web checkout and app-to-web purchases?

Both. Adapty grants in-app access for Stripe, Paddle and FunnelFox purchases and offers app-to-web paywall links. Superwall has its own Stripe-powered web checkout and app-to-web links for the US App Store, with Paddle in private beta. If Paddle matters today, Adapty supports it now.
